Italian wines are some of the most fascinating and delicious in the world. Learning about Italian wine, however, can be daunting at best. With 20 individual winemaking regions, thousands of different grape varieties, and an intricate system of classification and labeling, Italian wines are not easy to get to know. In this casual and informative workshop, we’ll start from the beginning, exploring Italian wine culture, laws, and varietals as we taste our way through both classic and undiscovered regions. We’ll also serve these incredible wines alongside a flight of artisanal cheeses and charcuterie to illustrate what perfect matches they make.
This class focuses on the wines of Central Italy. With a treasure trove of indigenous grape varieties, distinct geographic expressions, and rockstar winemakers, Central Italy has way more to offer than straw-wrapped bottles of Chianti. We’ll explore the diverse regions of Tuscany, Umbria, The Marche, Lazio and Abruzzo, tasting delicious examples from each. A range of cheeses and cured meats from all over Italy will be served as we explore where these wines fit into the basic principles of wine and food pairing. You’ll leave with a thorough understanding of the diversity and deliciousness of Central Italian wines, and an impressive arsenal of wine- and food-pairing skills.
