Some time ago my fellow sales staff and I were treated to a wonderful evening of food, drinks and merriment! Part of that night featured the entire lineup of Mount Gay rums. We were able to speak with the Master Blender and really experience their fantastic rums in all of their glory. This was all inspired by us commissioning a special blend by Mount Gay called “Black Barrel”. This name derives from the heavy-char barrel used in part of the aging process. The deep, rich, toasty and spicy notes truly make this a rum worthy of your shelf, and make this rum perfect for this cocktail!
Pour Mount Gay Astor Black Barrel Rum, Campari and Sorel into a mixing glass. Add ice to glass and stir vigorously. Pour into a highball glass, garnish with an orange peel, add a splash of tonic water, and enjoy!
The Pumpkin Patch
This is a refreshing, spicy cocktail made using a whiskey distilled from a pumpkin beer. That’s right, a whiskey made from a beer! This is interesting in that it not only incorporates a subtle pumpkin flavor into the whiskey but also the flavor of hops. Because it’s a beer it uses more aromatic yeast than what is found in your standard Malt whiskeys. The whiskey possesses a gentle sweetness, nice hoppy aromas and a smooth refreshing texture.
The cocktail takes all of these attributes and adds a little more depth and dimension while never compromising this great whiskey.
A dash of sweetness and a hint of spice to go along with it. This will be a hit at any party or evening at home!
2 oz. Great Lakes Distillery, Pumpkin Seasonal Spirit
2 dashes Hella Bitter Aromatic Bitters
2 dashes Bittermens Hopped Grapefruit Bitters
1 tsp. (bar) sugar
“Splash” water (still or sparkling)
1 orange slice
Add sugar to a glass. Pour bitters on top of sugar and pour in the whiskey. Add ice, stir vigorously, add a splash of H2O. Garnish with the orange slice and serve.
