Spotlight on: Greece
The adage “what grows together, goes together” proves true when it comes to pairing Greek wines. If you’re planning on enjoying seafood this summer, familiarize yourself with these picks from our staff.
Assyrtiko, Alexakis – 2022 $16.96
This is a full-bodied wine with citrus and mineral aromas. On the palate tropical fruit like mango flavors are present, followed by nectarine and green apple notes. To be paired with seafood and grilled fish! – Andrea Fraccari, Astor Wines & Spirits Consultant
Robola of Cephalonia, Robola Cooperative – 2021 $15.99
Attention Chablis fans: If you enjoy lean, high energy whites then it’s time to try Robola. Just like Assyrtiko, the grape loves island life, thriving primarily on the Ionian and Peloponnese islands, rather than Santorini. The wine is characterized by a bouquet of citrus, including grapefruit and lemon with white flowers occasionally intermingling on the fray. Salinity backs up the fruity, floral flavors and begs to be paired with a classic chicken kebab or veal atop rice pilaf with avgolemeno sauce. – Bambi Ray, Sales Manager
Limniona Rosé, Dom. Zafeirakis – 2022 $17.96
Here is a rare rosé that actually names its grape. The wine has the fresh, fruity flavors that always attracts us to rosé, yet its weight, concentration, minerality, and a silky, slick texture commands thought. You’ll taste red berries with hints of hard candy, maraschino, and savory herbs. Enjoy with Saganaki. – Chung Park, Astor Wines & Spirits Consultant
Retsina, “Pitys Ritinitis”, Troupis Winery – NV $19.99
Made with Assyrtiko, the crisp minerally white from Santorini, aged on the skins, and bottled unfiltered, this wine completely disrupts the Retsina category. It’s bright, refreshing, and textural, with ginger, tangerine, and grapefruit notes. Think ginger beer, but wine. Pair this with sushi and prepare to be astonished. – Amy Miller, Sales Manager
Moschomavro, Magoutes Vineyard, Diamantis – 2020 $21.96
As opposed to some of the bolder red varieties grown in neighboring regions, this Maschomavro is pale and crunchy with zippy acid, and notes of cherry, pomegranate and dried raspberries. It’s totally chillable, too. If you want an alternative to the more ubiquitous colors of wine consumed in the summer, or something with a bit more energy than the spicy, fuller bodied reds associated with winter, this variety is a sure bet. – Bambi Ray, Sales Manager
Ktima Biblia Chora, Pangeon Red – 2020 $31.96
The two producers of this excellent wine created their vineyard in 1998. It’s now a very established and recognized estate in Greece. Both producers studied in Bordeaux and brought their experiences back to Northern Greece. And, drinking this wine, you’ll notice their love for the Bordeaux blend style, with the difference of the addition of the Agiorgitiko grape: black fruit, chocolate, cedar, and spice are supported here by smooth tannins. A perfect red meat companion! – Andrea Fraccari, Astor Wines & Spirits Consultant
