CLASSIC DRY MARTINI
The Dry Martini is the king of classic cocktails, and although it’s made with only two main ingredients, variations seem limitless. The proportions, vermouth choice, gin vs vodka, stirred vs shaken are all a matter of personal preference. Winston Churchill thought that a bow in the direction of France would suffice for the vermouth. James Bond preferred his martinis shaken not stirred. The trick is discovering what you like, and the best way to do that is by starting with the basics. This recipe comes from the master himself Dale DeGroff, via The New York Times.
Serving: 1
INGREDIENTS
3 1/2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce vermouth
DIRECTIONS
1. Combine gin and vermouth in bartender’s glass filled with ice and stir with a long-necked spoon for 20 seconds. (If possible, use ice made from filtered water so as not to impart off flavors).
2. Strain into pre-chilled martini glass. You can chill by either filling a 7-ounce martini glass with ice and water or putting it in the freezer ahead of time.
3. Garnish with olive or lemon peel, or both.
