Cocktails For Irene

New York City is gearing up for a hard hit from Hurricane Irene – stores are closing, subways may shut down, people may evacuate, but for those of us who are staying put, we thought you might want to sit back and ride out the storm with a nice cocktail. Hailing from Miami, I’m well acquainted with hurricane preparations and in addition to your flashlights, canned food and water, I’m here to tell you that you should make sure to have some good spirits on hand as well. What better cocktails for this windy storm than a classic Hurricane and a Dark n’ Stormy? Here’s some recipes to get you through the madness:

Hurricane Cocktail

* 1-1/2 ounces light rum
* 1-1/2 ounces dark rum
* 1 ounce fresh orange juice
* 1 ounce fresh lime juice
* 2 ounces passion fruit syrup
* 1 teaspoon of real pomegranate grenadine

Shake with ice and strain into an ice-filled Hurricane glass, tiki glass, or Collins glass. Garnish with a “flag” made of an orange slice and a cherry on a cocktail pick.

Dark n’ Stormy

* 2 ounces dark rum
* 3 ounces ginger beer
* ½ ounce lime juice
