On May 5th, 2012, Derby Day meets Cinco de Mayo. To commemorate this beautifully boozy occasion, we created a custom cocktail (recipe below) and a money-saving pack containing Herencia Mexicana Anejo Tequila and two gleaming silver-plated julep cups. Buy the pack and save $24.95 off the full price!
Juleps weren’t always made only with Bourbon. A “julep” is simply a drink that combines a sweetener with a spirit, over ice, without bitters. This version doesn’t stray too far from the classic julep we all know: the Anejo Tequila is a good stand-in for the familiar Bourbon, as both have lots of toasty vanilla notes from their time in oak barrels, and the green notes of the agave-based spirit play very nicely with the herbal, refreshing mint.
The Tequila Julep
Created by Jenn Smith, Astor Center’s General Manager and resident mixologist
2 ounces Herencia Mexicana Anejo Tequila
1 teaspoon agave syrup
4 sprigs of mint
Place 8 mint leaves and the agave syrup in a silver julep cup and gently muddle using a press-and-twist motion – don’t beat the mint up. Pack the glass to the top with cracked ice. Pour the Tequila over the ice and stir until the ingredients are integrated and the glass frosts. Top the glass with more cracked ice, and garnish with the remaining sprigs of mint (you’ll have about 2 sprigs left), pinched just below the bottom leaves and slapped gently to release the aromatic oils.
