Vinho Verde: Great Wines That Won’t Break The Bank

“Let me get this straight: a bottle of wine, an enjoyable bottle of wine, for just $4? A mistake? Nope. An anomaly, perhaps, as this bottle is apparently available in the United States only at Astor Wines and Spirits in Greenwich Village.”

This is how Eric Asimov begins his exploration into the “inexpensive pleasures of Vinho Verde.” According to his latest New York Times article, the Portuguese “green wine” may be on the verge of reaching a similar craze to that of rosé. After a wine panel tasting of twenty bottles, a common thread of characteristics were found among the favorites: They were fresh, zesty, fizzy, zingy and lively. What more could you want in a summer wine? We’re fans of this $4 bottle as well, and as Asimov points out, “At that price, you can have a case of Vinho Verde for the cost of one mediocre bottle of chardonnay. Perfect time for a pool party.”
